This Report contains statistics tabulated from information collected in the Census of Population and Housing conducted in Norfolk Island on 7 August 2001, under Authority of the Norfolk Island Census and Statistics Act 1961.
It is intended that this Census provide up to date statistics for the island concerning the characteristics of the population and housing. This information is required to meet the needs of Government and private organisations for policy planning and research purposes.
As statistician for the Census, I take this opportunity to express my thanks to my Field Supervisor for his sterling efforts in coordination of the physical and logistical aspects of form distribution and collection.
My thanks also to the field collectors for their diligence in achieving as complete coverage of their districts as possible. Thanks also to the data processing crew for their accuracy and speed. Thanks also to the Administration staff who provided additional statistical information and to all those who contributed to the effort which results in the production of this Report.
Thanks also to Tracey Yager for allowing her drawing to be used at the front of the Dwelling Section. The house depicted holds special memories for me. While living there in 1981 I sat at the kitchen table with my future wife and filled out our Norfolk Island Census questionnaire. The house is included in the 2001 Census as an unoccupied dwelling.
Lastly, special thanks go to my wife for her patience and understanding during the Census exercise.
